Wide-plank oak and herringbone parquet solve different problems. Planks quiet a room and let long sightlines run uninterrupted; herringbone introduces rhythm and scale in spaces that would otherwise feel flat. Most estates use both, zoned deliberately.

Pattern selection by room proportion

• Single herringbone: Blocks laid at 90 degrees. Reads calm at 4 to 5 inch widths, formal at 6 inches and above.
• Double herringbone: Paired blocks that halve the visual frequency, suited to large open plans.
• Chevron: Mitered ends forming a continuous point. More directional, and roughly 15 percent more expensive to fabricate.

Micro-bevel or square edge

A micro-bevel absorbs the tiny height differences between boards and hides seasonal gapping. Square-edge floors look monolithic but demand a flatter subfloor, tighter humidity control, and a more skilled installer. Specify square edge only where the mechanical systems can hold 35 to 55 percent relative humidity year round.

Reactive stains and wire brushing

Reactive stains respond to tannins in the oak rather than sitting on the surface, so colour varies plank to plank in the way naturally aged floors do. Wire brushing removes soft early wood, raising grain texture that hides traffic wear.
