Underfloor Radiant Heating Compatibility with Engineered Oak

Core construction, surface temperature limits, and commissioning sequences that keep hardwood stable above radiant systems.

Radiant heat and hardwood coexist well, but only when the wood is engineered correctly and the system is commissioned in the right order. Most failures we are called to inspect are commissioning failures, not product failures.

Core construction matters more than species

  • Multi-ply birch or poplar core: Cross-banded layers restrain expansion in both directions. This is the specification to insist on.
  • Sawn-back or solid core: Moves more with cyclic heat. Acceptable only with narrow widths and conservative temperature limits.
  • Wear layer: 3mm to 6mm allows future refinishing without exposing the core.

Temperature limits

Surface temperature at the wood should never exceed 27 degrees Celsius, roughly 80 Fahrenheit. Above that, the wood dries from below and cupping follows. Zone controls and a floor sensor, not just an air thermostat, are mandatory.

Commissioning sequence

  • Run the system before installation: Minimum 14 days to drive residual construction moisture out of the slab.
  • Ramp down, then install: Drop to 18 degrees Celsius for 48 hours before the flooring goes down.
  • Ramp up slowly: Raise no more than 2 degrees per day after installation.
Documentation

Record slab moisture with an in-situ relative humidity probe, not a surface meter. Warranty claims routinely fail for want of that single reading.
