How custom mortise and tenon joinery combined with solid walnut construction transforms estate kitchens into heirloom living spaces.
Cabinet quality is decided at the joint. Fasteners and adhesives fail under seasonal movement; interlocking joinery grows tighter with load. Every Haven drawer box begins as quartersawn stock milled, rested, and re-milled before a single tail is marked.
Doors carry the visual weight of a kitchen, so we build them with haunched mortise and tenon rails rather than cope-and-stick profiles. The haunch fills the panel groove at the joint, preventing the racking that opens mitered corners after a few heating seasons.
Tenons are cut to one third of stock thickness and dry-fitted with a mallet, not a press. If it needs a press, the shoulder is wrong.
The result reads quietly. Owners notice the silence of a well-fitted drawer long before they notice the joinery that produced it.
Marcus leads the Haven millwork shop, where he has built inset cabinetry, libraries, and architectural panelling for three decades. He trained under English joiners and still cuts the first dovetail on every estate commission by hand.
