How panel scale, room proportion, and the starting point of the first panel determine whether a historic pattern reads as elegant or cramped.
The Versailles panel has survived three centuries because its geometry works at architectural scale. Shrink it, or centre it carelessly, and the same pattern turns busy.
Establish the centre line of the primary sightline, usually the main doorway, and work outward so cut panels land symmetrically at the perimeter. A full panel against one wall and a two-inch sliver against the other is the most common and most visible layout error.
Versailles panels demand 1/8-inch flatness over 10 feet. Budget for self-levelling compound as a certainty, not a contingency.
Helena directs the Haven design studio, translating architectural drawings into material palettes. Her work pairs quarried stone with hand-finished hardwood across residences in New York, Aspen, and the Hamptons.
