Finish choice determines how cabinetry ages, how it repairs, and how it feels under the hand. The three systems we specify behave very differently.
Penetrates the fibre and cures within it, leaving almost no film. Grain stays tactile, sheen stays low, and damage repairs with a rubbed spot rather than a refinish. It is the most forgiving finish over decades and the least resistant in the first week.
Builds a thin film polished back between coats. It produces the deepest visual clarity in walnut and the softest sheen gradient across a curved profile. Repairs require a finisher, not an owner.
A catalysed two-part film with the hardest surface of the three. Specified where alcohol, water, and heavy family traffic are constant, typically butler pantries and mudrooms. Spot repair is impractical; plan on refinishing whole doors.
Stain-matching is done on offcuts from your own lumber pack, never on generic sample stock. Same species, different tree, different result.
