Sealing Schedules: Engineered Quartz, Quartzite and Marble Compared

Which surfaces need sealing, which never do, and the one test that settles the question in half an hour.

Sealer sales are driven by anxiety rather than by porosity. Here is what each surface actually requires.

Engineered quartz: never

A resin-bound composite is non-porous by construction. Sealing it leaves a film that hazes and eventually needs stripping. Any contractor who recommends sealing engineered quartz is selling a service the product cannot use.

Quartzite: every 12 to 24 months

Dense but not impermeable. High-traffic zones around the sink and cooktop reach the end of a sealer cycle well before the far end of a perimeter run, so test where the work happens.

Marble and limestone: every 6 to 12 months

Genuinely porous and chemically reactive. Sealing prevents staining but never prevents etching, so set expectations accordingly on any calcite-based surface.

The 30-minute water test

  • Apply: A tablespoon of water on the busiest section of counter.
  • Wait: Thirty minutes, undisturbed.
  • Read: A dark ring means the sealer has expired. No change means leave it alone.
