Cabinet quality is decided at the joint. Fasteners and adhesives fail under seasonal movement; interlocking joinery grows tighter with load. Every Haven drawer box begins as quartersawn stock milled, rested, and re-milled before a single tail is marked.

Why dovetails outlast dowels

• Mechanical interlock: The wedge geometry resists the exact pull-out force a loaded drawer applies every day.
• Glue surface area: Long-grain contact across each tail creates a bond stronger than the surrounding fibre.
• Serviceability: A dovetailed box can be disassembled, re-fitted, and re-glued decades later. A stapled box cannot.

Frame joinery for face frames and doors

Doors carry the visual weight of a kitchen, so we build them with haunched mortise and tenon rails rather than cope-and-stick profiles. The haunch fills the panel groove at the joint, preventing the racking that opens mitered corners after a few heating seasons.

Specifying an heirloom box

1. Material: Solid walnut, white oak, or rift maple for boxes; plywood only where a full-extension slide demands dimensional stability.
2. Thickness: 5/8-inch sides minimum, 3/4-inch for drawers wider than 30 inches.
3. Bottom capture: Solid bottoms floating in a groove, never stapled beneath the box.
4. Finish: Interior surfaces oiled before assembly so seasonal movement never reveals raw wood.
